We asked Carolynn, our board member, if she has any top tips for anyone thinking about moving to sheltered housing, or any type of age-specific housing for people over 50, or for people living with a progressive condition.

Here’s what Carolynn shared with us.

As we all continue to live longer, gone are the old concepts of sheltered or retirement housing where people become old folk, whether you are buying or renting a property, consider finding out more about the community you are joining.

  • Ask to meet up with someone already living there. Some developments have ‘helpful homeowners’ or ambassadors who take a pastoral approach to helping anyone new to settle in.

  • Ask yourself , what qualities and life skills can you bring into the community . Do you like certain pastimes and hobbies that might interest your neighbours?

  • Remember, living in a shared community with communal spaces provides both security and opportunities for companionship. Even if you are not a social butterfly, you shouldn’t feel lonely.

I ‘right sized’ 4 years ago to live in an age specific community and I love it.  I appreciate having good neighbours and new friends. I also work in a lifestyle community, and I am amazed every day by the generosity and kindness of others.  People looking out for neighbours, participation in decisions that matter and simply being a good neighbour.
