At HOS, our brokerage team is dedicated to providing expert guidance and assistance to our clients. This support can take a range of forms, with tailored advice for each unique household. Our commitment to a person-centred service means that no two cases are the same. Below is a summary of some recent situations our clients have encountered over the past few weeks, along with the specific actions we’ve taken to support and assist them.
David, an armed forces veteran in his early 30s, recently completed rehab for alcohol addiction and is currently staying in a B&B. Understandably, he has found it very difficult to maintain his recovery in such transient accommodation. Despite being realistic about his limited chances of receiving a permanent housing offer during the current housing emergency, he remains hopeful.
Our broker has assisted David in applying for veterans’ supported accommodation, but unfortunately, his application was rejected because he was not far enough into his recovery. Nevertheless, our broker remains in regular contact with David, helping him explore other options and advocating on his behalf with the supported accommodation provider.
Margaret reached out for support in helping her daughter, Ailsa, live independently for the first time. Ailsa has complex needs, and as Margaret gets older, she is finding it increasingly difficult to provide the necessary care. Our broker worked with them to explore various options, including the possibility of Margaret moving out of the family home and renting it to Ailsa, as the property is already adapted to meet Ailsa’s needs.
To determine if this plan was feasible, our broker consulted with a benefits expert who provided valuable advice on what is required to make this a reality. We continue to support the family as they work towards this option.
Finally, we worked with Heather and Paul, who were in need of more suitable housing due to Paul’s battle with dementia and decreasing mobility. The couple owned their own property, and were low priority for rehousing with social housing providers.
Our broker went over a variety of options with them, and the couple were particularly interested in Access Ownership, a shared ownership scheme offered by Horizon Housing. This would mean that Horizon would own a stake in a new property, and they would pay rent on their share of the equity. Heather and Paul were accepted, and are delighted to have now moved into a new, suitable property they can call home.
It can be difficult to navigate your housing options alone. Our Housing Options Brokers are here to help and offer free, individualised support and advice. Get in touch or fill our our Get Help form if you need guidance.
