A new year often brings uncertainty, but it can also bring change. This January, our client stories shine a light on the journeys of people who sought support from Housing Options Scotland. Their stories remind us why accessible housing advice matters, and how it can open the door to safer, more secure futures.
Case Study: Supporting Douglas and His Family
Douglas and his family approached Housing Options Scotland after he underwent a life-changing operation that left him unable to access their second-floor flat.
At the same time, Douglas’ wife was working locally, and the family were keen to remain in the area. Relocating would have created additional stress and concerns around commuting during an already difficult period.
Housing Options Scotland stepped in to provide support.
Our broker worked closely with the family to complete social housing applications with two local housing associations, helping them stay close to Douglas’ wife’s workplace and maintain stability.
Following his discharge from hospital, Douglas became housebound. After around a month with no updates on their applications, our broker suggested setting up autobidding, which automatically places bids on suitable properties and removes the pressure of having to bid online.
Shortly after autobidding was activated, the family received an offer of a property from a local housing association. The family’s Occupational Therapist is now due to assess the property to ensure it meets Douglas’ needs before the family attends a viewing.
Although the offer has not yet been accepted, it represents a significant step forward for the family. Our broker will continue to support them throughout the process until they are successfully rehoused.
Case Study: Supporting Brian to Find a More Suitable Home
As Brian began to get older, he realised that his large three-bedroom house was no longer manageable on his own. He decided it was the right time to explore downsizing to a home that better suited his needs.
Brian contacted Housing Options Scotland to understand what options might be available if he chose to move. As a homeowner, he was unsure whether buying another property was the right next step at this stage of his life.
After discussing his situation with one of our brokers, several options were explored. These included buying and selling, private renting, and sheltered housing. Brian was particularly interested in private renting, but despite searching, he was unable to find a property that met his accessibility needs.
At this point, our broker stepped in to provide additional support. Using their professional contacts, they reached out to Accessible Housing Scotland to seek specialist advice and assistance in identifying a suitable private rented property for Brian.
Accessible Housing Scotland agreed to support Brian and are now working with him to move the process forward.
Although Brian has not yet secured a new home, this support has been a vital step in his journey. Without the help of Housing Options Scotland, Brian may not have known where to turn or how to access the right expertise to find a home that meets his needs.
Case Study: Supporting Sarah to Explore Her Housing Options
After leaving her family home a few years earlier, Sarah had struggled to find somewhere suitable to live long term. She moved between shared accommodation and friends’ houses, but none of these arrangements provided lasting stability.
Wanting to find a more permanent solution, Sarah contacted Housing Options Scotland for support. Due to her circumstances, Sarah was identified as needing homeless advice and was contacted as a priority.
Our broker provided her with clear information about her housing rights and advised her to complete a homeless application when she felt able to do so.
When Sarah did not respond, our broker followed up to check whether she had been able to make an application. Sarah explained that she had not, as she felt nervous about the process and was unsure whether it was the right option for her.
Our broker offered reassurance, alternative housing options and ongoing support. Explaining the process in more detail and offering assistance at every stage. While Sarah remains hesitant, our broker will continue to stay in touch and support her while she considers the best course of action for her situation.
Although Sarah has not yet secured a housing solution, she is now better informed about her options. With the continued support of Housing Options Scotland, Sarah can focus on her long-term housing future rather than relying on short-term arrangements.
Case Study: Supporting Brenda and Her Family to Plan Their Housing Future
Following a life-changing event, Brenda required 24-hour support at home. This meant the family needed to explore moving to a larger property so they could provide the care and support Brenda now required.
After an initial conversation with one of our brokers, several housing options were identified. However, both our broker and the family’s social worker felt it would be most helpful for everyone involved to come together to discuss the options in detail.
Our broker attended a meeting with the family, where a range of housing options were explored, including purchasing, Mid Market Rent, and social housing.
During the discussion, our broker explained each option clearly and guided the family through the costs, benefits, and practical considerations to help them focus on what would work best for their circumstances.
Once the family had identified which options they wanted to explore further, our broker provided a written summary of everything discussed. Clear follow-up actions were agreed by everyone involved to ensure progress could continue.
Although the family are still considering their next steps, this support has helped them move forward with a clear plan.
At Housing Options Scotland, we use face-to-face meetings where needed to help families understand their options, make informed decisions, and plan confidently for their housing future.
