Client Stories: September

At Housing Options Scotland (HOS), we understand that no two housing journeys are the same. From older adults looking for accessible homes to veterans facing housing insecurity, our brokers tailor their advice and support to each client’s unique needs. In September, we were able to assist several individuals with a variety of housing challenges. Here are just a few examples of how we made a difference.

Louise’s Story: Finding Sheltered Housing After Losing a Home

Louise, in her early sixties, had been living comfortably in the private rented sector until her landlord unexpectedly sold the property. With nowhere to go, she stayed temporarily with a friend in Inverclyde but was unsure what to do next. After contacting HOS, we provided advice on making a homelessness presentation and discussed the possibility of sheltered housing as a long-term solution. Thanks to our close partnership with Trust Housing Association, Louise was offered a sheltered property in East Renfrewshire—just four weeks after reaching out to us. Now, Louise has a safe and secure place to call home.

Jordan’s Story: Securing Affordable Housing for a Veteran’s Family

Jordan was living with his wife and child in an expensive private rental in Edinburgh. After being discharged from the armed forces on health grounds, he was only able to work part-time, making the high rent unsustainable. The rising costs left the family anxious about their future. That’s when HOS stepped in. We connected Jordan with a small military charity we work closely with, and they were able to provide a three-bedroom property with a garden in Edinburgh at a much more affordable rent. Now, Jordan and his family are thriving in their new home, relieved of the financial burden they once faced.

Anna’s Story: Addressing Unsuitable Housing for Accessibility Needs

Not all clients receive the right housing on their first try. Anna, who had been allocated a property through a homelessness application, found herself stuck in an unsuitable home. When she viewed the property, she had raised concerns about its accessibility, but was told to accept the offer as it would be her only one. Unfortunately, she wasn’t accompanied by an Occupational Therapist during the viewing, so her specific needs weren’t considered. Now, she is unable to leave her accommodation due to its inaccessibility, and the local authority is unable to make the necessary adaptations. We provided Anna with advice on different housing options and are helping her consider making a new homelessness application to find a more suitable home.

Margaret’s Story: Supporting a Cross-Border Move for Care

Margaret, an older lady, came to us for help while living in England. As her health declined, her family wanted her to move to Scotland so they could assist with her care. Margaret was unsure where to begin, but we helped her navigate the complex housing system and submit several applications. We explained the high demand for sheltered accommodation in her desired area and encouraged her to stay open to accepting a suitable offer when one came. Before long, Margaret was able to move into a home in a neighboring village close to her daughter. She is delighted with her new home and the support she now has.

Navigating housing challenges alone can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to face it on your own. With personalized support from HOS, we can help turn a difficult situation into a brighter future. Get in touch today if you need guidance or fill out our Get Help form to take the first step.
